Friday, December 14 2007

Unalaska, AK – An American flag traveling to battlefields and cemeteries across the country as part of a national memorial tour will be in Unalaska Monday morning.

The tour, called Old Glory's Journey of Remembrance, is sponsored by the White House Commission on Remembrance and the National Park Service. Unalaska is the second stop for the flag, which will be flown over the U.S. Capitol on Memorial Day after ceremonies at memorial sites around the United States.

The flag began its journey in Pearl Harbor on December 7, the anniversary of the Japanese attack there. It will be visiting a new site each week until Memorial Day.

The flag will be raised by the Coast Guard at 10 a.m. on Monday in a ceremony at the World War II National Historic Area, an event that will also include remarks by the mayor and a performance by the school choir. Admission at the historical center is free all day courtesy of the Ounalashka Corporation.
