Unalaska, AK – In addition to approving the PSEA contract and voting down the port tariff increases on Tuesday, the city council voted to give all Title III employees a 3 percent cost of living wage increase. The Title III wage matrix has not been increased since 2001 while the cost of living has risen. The city manager, who will not get a raise from this ordinance, told the council that in order to keep the positions competitive, an increase is necessary. It will affect 23 employees and has already been budgeted for. The city also plans on doing a wage and compensation study later this fiscal year.

The council unanimously decided to extend the contracts for the city's lobbyists in Juneau and in Washington, DC. They said that the lobbyists worked hard and brought many funds into the community.

The council decided to seek funds for other projects as well. In a 4 to 1 vote the council authorized the city manager to apply for funds from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation to build an 8-plex apartment building. Councilmember Dennis Robinson opposed the move because he does not think the city should be building and providing housing. Skip Southworth also said that he thought the city should help new employees buy housing not just provide it, but he supported the seeking of funds.

Additionally, the council approved a resolution to show support for the Kodiak Kenai Cable Company's project to build a fiber optic cable loop through Unalaska to provide high speed internet to the region.
