PCR gym floor fixed ahead of schedule

Unalaska, AK – Repair work on the water-damaged floor of the main gym at the Parks, Culture & Recreation center has wrapped up sooner than expected, and the project was completed without having to replace any floorboards.
PCR Director Jeff Hawley said the gym is expected to open to the public on July 6, about two months ahead of schedule.
"We've got it repainted, resurfaced, refinished, and it's a beautiful floor," he said. "I can't wait to have the community come in and start using it again."
The PCR floor was damaged on March 10, when the combination of a broken heater and a cold snap in the weather burst a pipe in the gym. That incident forced the closure of the gym for nine days, while PCR employees dried out the floorboards.
Repairs were originally scheduled for late July, but the contractor slated for the job was able to make it out earlier this month and finish ahead of schedule. Hawley said that most of the other PCR facilities that were closed during the repair work are open again, too.
Hawley said the repairs cost about $40,000, which is somewhat less than the city initially expected. That's partially because no wood had to be replaced, a fact that Hawley credited to the PCR employees efforts to dry out the floorboards quickly after the pipe burst.
