Police: Recent Vehicle Theft a Warning to Residents

Monday, April 28 2014
It's not common practice to lock your car in Unalaska. But police say an alleged theft on Sunday is a reminder to residents to keep their property safe.
A UniSea truck was allegedly stolen from outside the airport Sunday and driven to the Russian Orthodox church. Police say 29-year-old Ishmael Guerrero left the truck outside, broke into the church and did damage to artifacts.
Police chief Jamie Sunderland says in that case, the truck was left unattended with the keys in the center console for just about five minutes.
"I would say that in my years here, out of all the vehicle thefts we’ve had -- which, it isn’t that common here, but... I can only remember one that the keys weren’t in the car," he says. "One case ever that we’ve had where someone actually hot-wired a car."
He says drivers whose cars get stolen don’t always leave their keys in the ignition. He says many people hide their keys in what they think are "secret places" -- behind a visor, under a floormat or in an ashtray.
But he says that’s no deterrent if a car is unlocked.
"Certainly, no one deserves to have their property taken," he says. "But we’d certainly ask people to please, you know, take your keys with you and lock your property up."
The truck stolen Sunday was recovered at the church a short time later and returned to the UniSea employee who'd been driving it. The vehicle didn’t suffer any serious damage; in fact, the employee drove it to court Monday to attend Guerrero's arraignment.
