Unalaska police and the Coast Guard are searching for a missing woman who didn’t return from an apparent hike in the Pyramid Peak area Sunday night.

Jessica Acker, 33, is a fisheries observer working for Alaskan Observers at Westward Seafoods. Police Chief Jamie Sunderland says she appears to have taken her hiking gear and left for a hike early Sunday afternoon, possibly in the Pyramid area above Westward.

The 2,300-foot-tall peak is a popular hiking spot, with common routes around the summit that are 3 or 4 miles long. Cell service is typically patchy on those trails.

Police were called when Acker didn’t come back to work by late Sunday night. Sunderland says officers and Coast Guard personnel began looking for her at daylight, shortly before 10 a.m. Monday.

Acker is "apparently an avid hiker and outdoorsperson," says Sunderland. She had worked at least couple of fishing seasons in Unalaska before. He says her family has been contacted.

Weather was snowy and cold Sunday evening and overnight. Wind chill was down to the single digits at times, with wind gusts as high as 40mph recorded at the airport.
