Police Wipe Dust Off Identity Theft Case

A 12-year-old case of mistaken identities is in the process of being resolved.
Last week, the Unalaska Department of Public Safety received a call from a Colorado man saying that his identity had been stolen by an Unalaska resident. When police ran a records check, they discovered that an undocumented immigrant had been arrested under his name for stealing a vehicle and driving while intoxicated in Unalaska in 2000.
A Homeland Security officer discovered that the perpetrator was not using his real name during the processing of that case, and eventually, he was deported. But according to Deputy Chief Mike Holman, instances of his stolen name have remained in the system until now. When the Colorado man applied for a job as a heavy equipment operator this year, he discovered that there was a warrant out for his arrest.
Holman says that the state’s now working on trying to get him out of the system.
“The district attorney is in the process of quashing [the warrant], and they’ll be issuing it in the correct name of the individual who was arrested under the wrong name,” says Holman.
Holman adds that the Department of Public Safety is unable to release the victim’s name, and that they do not have the real name of the perpetrator at this time.
