Potential post office closure

Unalaska, AK – The United States Postal Service is considering closing one of the post offices in town but no decision has been made yet. Postal Service communications specialist Ernie Swanson said a special committee is considering the consolidation of post offices around the state and the country in order to save money.
"The situation in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor is we're looking at both situations to see if we decide to pursue a consolidation, which location would we prefer to stay in, which would be best for our customers, so on and so forth. At this point that's on the table but no final decision has been made."
Swanson said the committee could make a decision in about a month, but it will probably take a bit longer. At that point, they would collect public input. Postal service customers will be given surveys and the service will host a public comment meeting to collect opinions on the situation. Swanson said people can tell the service which office they prefer to leave open or if they think a change would be detrimental and why.
If the postal service decides to consolidate the two offices it will not happen until this fall. However, Swanson emphasizes that no decision has been made yet, and the public will have plenty of time to give input before any decision becomes final.
