Problems Persist at Unalaska's Powerhouse

Thursday, August 22 2013

A glitch in one of Unalaska’s generators is still causing issues down at the power plant.

Public utilities director Dan Winters says a problem with the generator’s regulatory system triggered a power outage around 9 o’clock Wednesday morning. The generator slowed down suddenly, which caused an automatic shutdown.

That same glitch caused a string of blackouts earlier this summer.

Winters says workers were investigating the problem Thursday morning when they accidentally jostled a loose wire in the generator’s main circuit breaker. That caused a 15-minute power outage, starting around 8:05 am. Areas around Captains Bay and the Valley were affected.

Winters says utilities workers are trying to find a permanent solution.
