Public Hearing on City Pay Raises Set for December

Wednesday, November 27 2013

City council pushed several items from their agenda Tuesday night to their next meeting after the Thanksgiving holiday. That meeting will be Dec. 17. It’ll include a public hearing on wage increases for Title 3 employees.

Council voted to revisit the proposed increases and the larger overhaul in the works for the city’s pay range matrix at that hearing. The Title 3-specific ordinance also includes a proposed $7,000 budget increase for the airport.

This week's meeting agenda also included a proposal to make the Alaska Chadux Corporation responsible for maintaining and deploying the city’s oil response equipment. But Mayor Shirley Marquardt said the resolution wasn’t ready for a vote. That issue was removed from the agenda. It’ll come up again Dec. 17.

Also pushed to Dec. 17 is a resolution on making a donation to typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines. Several members of the Fil-Am Assocation attended last night’s meeting. They said they’d given $13,000 of what they fundraised to Catholic Relief Services, and they hoped the city would make a contribution too. The original request for the donation came at council’s Nov. 12 meeting.

Councilor Dennis Robinson said he’d support a $5,000 donation. Councilor Tom Enlow also said he’d support some kind of contribution, but he wanted to know more about how Catholic Relief Services uses donations.

City staff members will write up a formal resolution on the donation, and council will vote on it at their next meeting.
