Public Safety Responds to Two Unrelated Deaths, Investigates One

Tuesday, November 13 2012

Two people passed away in Unalaska last week. Right now, the Department of Public Safety is investigating the death of Yvonne Grossman, age 45.

Grossman was found Friday afternoon in the cabover camper she shared with her boyfriend in the valley. Sgt. Jennifer Shockley says Grossman’s boyfriend called public safety at around 3 p.m. to report the death.

"We don’t at this point have any reason, specifically, to suspect any foul play," Shockley says. "But neither do we have a cause of death yet."

Shockley says police received a bad tip about Grossman’s death from a concerned community member. That may have contributed to rumors that a second body had been found in the valley over the weekend.

"You know, just trying to clarify: No, we have two different reports regarding the same person, who was believed to be at two separate locations," she says.

Some of the confusion might have been due to the fact that another Unalaska resident passed away Tuesday.

John Brandon, age 46, was a longtime employee of Westward Seafoods. He was taken to the clinic by ambulance after complaining of difficulty breathing and died shortly after.

While public safety isn’t sure about Brandon’s next of kin, they have been able to locate Grossman’s family in Anchorage and notify them of their relative’s passing.

Public safety sent Grossman’s body to the medical examiner Monday for autopsy. Shockley says they can determine the cause of death, and whether there was foul play, within a week. More detailed information, like toxicology results, might take longer.

In the meantime, Shockley says Grossman’s camper in the valley is a crime scene. She says Unalaska public safety officers are interviewing people who last saw Grossman.

"We are conducting an investigation to try to determine when she was last alive, what she might have been doing, when she may have died," says Shockley. "But we don’t, at this point, have any reason to suspect anybody of wrongdoing."
