Unalaska, AK – The Unalaska Raiders won their first tournament this weekend. The boys' team came in first of four teams by winning all three of their games at the Kotzebue Klassic. On Thursday, the boys team faced the Dillingham Wolverines. They led the game by double digits from start to finish and won by 10 points, 58 to 48. Their Friday night match up against Kotzebue presented more of a challenge but in the end they were once again ahead, this time just by four points. They beat the home team 47 to 43.
On Saturday the boys challenged the Mount Edgecombe Braves. The game was tight up to the last seconds. The last minute was peppered with fouls and free throws. With 40 seconds left Cameron Lynch missed a free throw, Mt. Edgecombe made a three-pointer, and the score narrowed to 48 to 44. Luckily Mark Sorenson went to the line two more times and made all four free throw shots for four more points. The score rose 52 to 44 and stayed there as Mt. Edgecombe controlled the ball but repeatedly missed shots and rebounds.
The boys won the tournament and two players, Cameron Lynch and Michael Fernandez, were named to the all-tournament team. Adrian Del Rosario won the three point shooting contest as well. The boys end their regular season play on a high as they prepare for next week's regionals competition here in Unalaska.
The girls' team, however, has had an extremely rough year. They started off the Kotzebue tournament against Dillingham and the Wolverines more than doubled the Raiders score, winning 31 to 15. The Thursday defeat seemed to have impacted the team because when they faced Kotzebue on Friday, they lost 48 to 10. Despite this, they bucked up and tried again against Mt. Edgecombe on Saturday only to lose by an even 40 points - 55 to 15. Despite their painful defeats, the girls will try again for a win this year during the regional tournament next week. The girls are 0 for 12.
