Unalaska, AK – This weekend, the Unalaska Raiders traveled to play in the Kotzebue Classic tournament. The boys came in second, while the girls placed third.
The boys played their first game against Point Hope Harpooners on Thursday, losing 87-42. But Coach Jim Wilson says that it was good practice playing against a team that's won the 2A state championship two years in a row.
"It's just a really good experience for the kids to learn how to play against a team that can bring some really intense pressure," says Wilson.
On Friday, the boys played Kotzebue, and won the game 50-31. While the Raiders were up in the first half, they slipped a bit in the third quarter and had to regroup.
"We had some difficulty rebounding the ball earlier in the game," says Wilson. "But the kids did a nice job of fighting of the rally and coming back with a rally of their own."
The boys also won their game against Nenana, with a final score of 60-49.
The Lady Raiders also played some competitive games. They lost against the Point Hope Harpooners 68-20, and also suffered a 12-point defeat against Kotzebue.
But the girls brought home a win against Nenena on Saturday, securing them third place in the tournament. The score was the 33-30.
Coach Al Haskins says that the girls definitely improved their skills during the tournament.
"The girls really figured out how to handle the full-court press," says Haskins.
He also adds that the girls were at a disadvantage, since some of their star players were injured.
"A couple of girls got injured. Asia Vernon got injured during the warm-ups of the first game, and she didn't get to play at all this weekend, so that kind of hurt," says Haskins.
The Raiders will compete in the regional tournament next week.
