Raiders Fall to Dillingham in Close Double Header

Wednesday, February 18 2015

The Raiders boys’ basketball team fell to Dillingham in a pair of close games this past weekend, as they head into the end of their regular season.

The boys played away on Saturday and Monday. The first game went into overtime, and came down to a three-pointer from Dillingham with just a second on the clock. That gave the Wolverines a 49-48 win.

It was a tough loss for coach Kent Russell’s Raiders, after an intense game with a tight score throughout.

"It’s heartbreaking to lose by one point, because then you can go back and look at where, like, ‘If I’d have made that layup, we might have won.’ It’s always the woulda-shoulda game," he says. "So it goes down to trying to execute earlier in the game so you don’t end in that position."

Unalaska took another narrow beat in Monday’s game, 38-34. Russell says they had a good start -- Dillingham only scored two points in the second quarter -- but the Wolverines took the victory in the end. Russell says good defense on both sides kept the scores low all weekend.

The Raiders will see Dillingham again at regionals, but they have to finish their regular season first. They’ll play Sand Point and the Kuskokwim Learning Center at home this weekend, weather permitting.

The Raiders are ranked second in their conference going into those games. Dillingham is in the top spot.

Weather permitting, the boys' basketball team will play Sand Point here at home on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m. for Senior Night, and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. They'll play Kuskokwim Learning Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Raider girls are scheduled to be away in Sand Point this weekend. And the Raider boys and girls have home scrimmages scheduled for Friday and Saturday afternoons at the high school.
