Unalaska’s Native Youth Olympics team took home gold medals, a new world record and a second-place finish at the state competition in Anchorage last week.
Steven Ugale topped his own world-record toe kick by three inches, earning gold for a 99-inch jump. And he placed second in the one-foot high kick.
Dylan Magnusen won gold with a 66.5-inch kneel jump -- just half an inch short of his world record last year. He also took first place in the two-foot high kick. He was named the top overall male athlete of the games.
Mandy Magnusen also earned gold with a seal hop of almost 122 feet.
And Cynthia Drayton took silver in the Eskimo stick pull for the first time. She says NYO’s spirit of cooperation makes it unique.
"It’s a different environment from other sports -- I mean, even though you guys are competing against each other, it’s more for your personal best, beating your own personal record," she says. "Everybody just comes up from other teams to help you out and give you tips on what can help you improve to kick higher or pull stronger. It’s like a big huge family."
Boys' coach Steven Gregory agrees that NYO is all about teamwork.
"It’s a tradition of sharing what you know. It’s a lot of camaraderie," he says. "It’s not a cutthroat sporting event -- the kids, they help each other."
Still, Unalaska played to win. They finished second overall with 31 points, just one point off from Lower Kuskokwim School District. Last year, Gregory says the Raiders finished fifth with 19 points.
"It was a surprise to do so well," he says. "I mean, we knew we’d do well, but coming in second to the top team in the state year after year after year -- we’re pretty happy."
Gregory says he hopes they can keep improving and bring home a win next year.
