Resignations Leave Gap on Planning & Preservation Boards
Tuesday, February 03 2015
Two resignations in the past few weeks have left a hole on Unalaska's planning and historic preservation commissions.
Steven Gregory was the joint commissions' chair, and one of its longest-serving members. In his resignation letter, he said he needs more time for teaching and coaching at the high school, among several other commitments.
Gregory also wrote that he doesn’t have enough time or "interest" to contribute to the historic preservation commission, which he calls "important and demanding." Preservation has only been active and a part of planning since last year.
James Santana, on the other hand, was the boards' newest member. His resignation letter says he’s moving away from Unalaska at the end of the month.
That means the city is now looking for two new commissioners. Interested residents can apply with the city clerk’s office. The mayor makes the final appointments. Deputy clerk Roxanna Winters said she hadn't received any applications as of Tuesday afternoon.
Until the seats are filled, the two boards will meet with a reduced membership. Their next meeting is Feb. 26.
The combined planning and historic preservation commissions typically meet on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Anyone with questions about the open seats can call the planning department at 581-3100.
