Rough Weather Damages F/T Katie Ann

Saturday, February 08 2014

Updated, 3 p.m. Sunday: The catcher-processor Katie Ann diverted to Unalaska this weekend after a large wave blew out several windows on the vessel's bridge. In the process, about six crew members were injured.

The 295-foot vessel traveled to Unalaska under its own power. The Katie Ann and its crew arrived at the Kloosterboer dock on Saturday afternoon. Unalaska's public safety personnel met them there.

"We responded and did an assessment of the situation with EMS," says Sergeant Bill Simms.

The injuries among the crew appeared to be "superficial," Simms says. "The captain was allowed to transport the patients [to the clinic]."

None of the injured crew had to be medevacked.

The Katie Ann was on active fishing grounds northwest of Unimak Island when it sustained damage, says Coast Guard GS11 Steve Garcia, with the Anchorage control center.

The incident was reported to the Coast Guard around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Withheld by request on Wednesday, February 12 2014:

Been there done that, you know not of what you speak. The boat was making under 2 knots, jogging with the gear on deck. Normal storm procedure. This was just a freak wave, no recklessness here.

295ft vessel is not big enough when you are bearing down full throttle on 40ft seas!!
