Salvage plan in the works for the Icy Mist

Unalaska, AK – The Coast Guard is working with Magone Marine and the Alaska Department of Conservation on a salvage plan for the F/V Icy Mist , which grounded on Akutan Island Wednesday morning. According to the crew of the vessel, approximately 2,700 gallons of diesel, 150 gallons of lube oil and 200 gallons of hydraulic oil are on board. Coast Guard Petty Officer Sara Francis says the ship is still upright on the beach and the fuel tanks in the stern are fairly protected.
"Our primary focus is protection of the environment and safe removal of the oils," she said. "Once that's done we'll look at removal of the vessel itself. And given the conditions and the distance, removal of the vessel itself might be a bit protracted."
The current weather conditions, the location of the ship near a bluff, and the distance from Unalaska prevent the Coast Guard and Magone Marine from using small boats to remove the fuel from the vessel. Instead they will use helicopters and barrels.
"Dan Magone anticipates airlifting his crew to bluff and using climbing equipment to climb down the face of the bluff to the vessel and then they'll swing load the rest of their equipment to the vessel."
They will use a commercial helicopter that will arrive from King Salmon within 24 hours. The next good weather window will probably be this weekend. The Coast Guard is also looking into what to do with the 60,000 pounds of cod that are onboard the vessel.
"It will certainly be easier to move the vessel without the weight of that fish on board so we're reaching out the National Marine Fisheries Service to figure out what the appropriate method is to deal with the fish," Francis said.
The 58-foot Icy Mist is homeported in Kodiak. All four crew members were successfully rescued after three attempts and were transported to Unalaska for interviews. According to Coast Guard policy, they are all tested for drugs and alcohol as well, to see if that was a factor in the incident.
