Eight months ago, an abandoned Northern fur seal pup was found on on a doorstep in Sand Point. Now, the pup has a new home in Boston -- and last week, he got a visit from a boy who helped named him.

Twelve-year-old Logan Thompson traveled from Sand Point all the way to the New England Aquarium, the Associated Press reports. Thompson was on the East Coast to see family.

The pup’s name is Chiidax, which means "young animal" in Unangam Tunuu. The AP reports that Thompson got to greet to Chiidax and watch him play and talk with other seals in a training area.

The pup was found in a box outside the state Fish & Game office in Sand Point back in November. He was taken to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward for care.

Distance learning specialist Darin Trobaugh says they set up a videoconference with the Sand Point School soon after the seal arrived in Seward. Students got to meet the pup on camera, and ask some questions: "What he’s like, what he likes to do and how he spends his time -- that was another question that the kids wanted to know, what does he do on a daily basis," says Trobaugh.

"It was great, because [Chiidax] was very active while we were connected with the students," he says. "So they got to see him in and out of the pool, and running around a lot and swimming around a lot and grooming his fur -- and they got to see a lot of his personality and learn about it."

Then, Trobaugh says the students chose names.

"He’d need to have a name that would carry some part of Alaska with him, but also it needed to be a name that was realistic," Trobaugh says. "You know, something that people could pronounce and spell, and not too many syllables."

Logan Thompson told the AP that he suggested the winner: Chiidax.

The seal was a rare find for the SeaLife Center. But Trobaugh says about half the kids in Sand Point had seen a Northern fur seal before.

Chiidax was moved to Boston in December. He’s now healthy and growing, and is one of several Northern fur seals living at the New England Aquarium.
