Scouts Suspend City Recycling Program

Wednesday, August 21 2013

Unalaska's plastic recycling program is on hold.

Margo Peters oversees the program at the landfill for the city's scout troops. She says she decided to stop recycling because residents were throwing too much trash in with their plastic and aluminum.

"The little boy scouts and girl scouts were out there sorting through garbage, basically, trying to get the plastic that we could use," she says. "At least a third of it was just garbage that went right into the dump."

Peters says she'll restart the recycling program once she's done designing a new container.

"It'll have smaller holes, so you can't take a whole bag of garbage and just shove it in there."

Once the new container is installed, residents can drop off aluminum cans, and number 1 and number 2 plastics -- items like water bottles, milk jugs, and peanut butter jars. Peters says styrofoam and plastic shopping bags -- any plastic numbered 3 through 7 -- won't be accepted anymore.

Maybe putting signs up in the different languages would help people know where to put the right things in the right places. With the dumpsters for the trash right there I think maybe they are not sure where to put what. Good luck and thank you for all your work Margo!!

Thank you Margo, and the scouts for all your hard work. You are appreciated! Thank you Margo for being willing to continue to problem solve this, so we can recycle in the future.
