Search called off for missing Heritage crew member

Monday, July 24 2006

Unalaska, AK – U.S. Coast Guard crews have called off the search for a victim of a marine accident Sunday night in the Bering Sea. A skiff from the Kodiak-based research vessel Heritage capsized near Saint Matthew Island at about 11 p.m. Sunday night, with four crew members on board. Three of them were able to swim to shore, but the fourth is still missing. A Kodiak-based Coast Guard helicopter made several passes over the area and the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Morganthau dispatched a small boat to search the coastline of Saint Matthew, where the skiff was headed, both without success. The Coast Guard hasn't released the name of the missing crew member yet and the vessel's owner, the Heritage Fishing Partnership, couldn't be reached for comment today. The Heritage was conducting research for the International Pacific Halibut Commission.
