Search continues for missing fisherman

Unalaska, AK – The search for John F. Courage continues into its third week. The 56-year-old fisherman went missing on December 29, and the Unalaska Department of Public Safety, the Coast Guard, and the Alaska State Troopers have been working to determine his whereabouts.

At the time of his disappearance, Courage had been working aboard the F/V Alaska Trojan. The vessel had been moored at the Crowley Dock in December, and Courage was tasked with conducting boat watch until the crew arrived in Unalaska. When the crew returned on December 30, they could not locate Courage, whose personal belongings - including his wallet and identification -- were found left in a stateroom. Courage was last seen at the Alaska Ship Supply liquor store.

On January 2, Capt. Ray Flerchinger requested a welfare check and notified public safety that a survival suit was also missing from the Alaska Trojan. That suit was later discovered floating in the Illiuliuk South Channel, over a mile from the vessel's mooring location.

Sgt. Michael Holman says that the Department of Public Safety has reached out to other crabbing and longlining vessels to find out if Courage had taken up a job elsewhere. Divers have also conducted searches in the water near the Crowley dock. Holman says that locating Courage has so far been a collaborative effort, using local, state, and federal resources.

"The Coast Guard has broadcast a message to all the fishing boats out in the area," says Holman. "We've contacted the troopers and they're also going to be looking for him while they're doing their patrols on the Stimson."

Holman adds that missing person cases in Unalaska usually do not last this long.

"We get welfare checks fairly frequently," says Holman. "They usually wind up being that someone hasn't called home or went somewhere and didn't let their skipper know where they're going. It's not common for it to drag on this length of time."

Courage was last seen wearing a red shirt, a black jacket, and jeans.
