Search ends for missing two

Monday, October 27 2008

Unalaska, AK – The search for the last two crew members of the Katmai was called off Sunday morning and the survivors and others began testifying Monday before the Coast Guard Board of Inquiry about what happened to the catcher-processor when it went down last Wednesday. Four of the 11-member crew were rescued from a life raft by a Coast Guard swimmer. They are Capt. Henry Blake III, of Massachusetts, Adam Foster of Shoreline, Washington, and Guy Schroder and Harold Appling, both of Anchorage.

Five bodies were found; those of Cedric Smith and Glenn Harper of Portland, Oregon, greenhorn Jake Gilman from Camus, Washington, greenhorn Joshua Leon-guerrero of Spanaway, Washington, and Fuli Lemusu of Salem, Oregon. The two who remain missing and are presumed dead are Carlos Zebala of Helena, Montana, and Robert Davis of Deming, Washington.

The Katmai is the fourth head-and-gut boat to sink in the past decade. The Artic Rose went down in 2001 and 15 men were lost, the Alaska Ranger lost 5 in the spring.

Listen to APRN's Steve Heimel's report from the inquiry in Anchorage.
