Small Spill Contained in Dutch Harbor

Thursday, September 29 2011

A cargo vessel spilled a small amount of fuel oil into Dutch Harbor on Wednesday.

The Nelson Star was moored at the Unalaska City Dock when it released about 150 gallons the oil into the water.

“It looks like they intended to pump over what they thought was clean water -- something they do routinely. But there was a crack somewhere in the system, and as a result they pumped over some oil,” say Petty Officer Peter Whale with the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment.

According to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, a light sheen is visible on the water and has reached the shore. However, the spill has not affected wildlife. Whale says that the overall impact has been minimal, and the spill does not extend beyond the dock area.

“If the weather had been worse, it might have been different,” says Whale. “But the weather was pretty calm at the time.”

A company has been hired to clean the spill, and they have put boom in the water to contain the oil.
