Unalaska, AK – Unalaska's soap box derby champions recently returned from the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. Emerson Winters competed in the super stock division and Ethan Mahoney in the stock. Both were eliminated in the first round.
It was ten-year-old Mahoney's first time to Akron. With his soap box derby car freshly adorned with new decals, he met his father in Anchorage for their first trip alone together. Mahoney said the race was very different than the one in Unalaska.
"It seemed very over done," Mahoney said. "I used to think they would just use a road, but they actually had tracks. They had bleachers on it and it was straight down. And it was amazing."
He says he wasn't disappointed about losing in the first heat.
"The race, it's more luck. Two-thirds are luck and one third is skill," he explained. " Cause it's the time of day, what track you get, and which wheels you get. So, I didn't have very good wheels and I wasn't in a very good track, so I lost in the first heat."
He and his father spent most of their remaining time in Akron in movie theaters they altogether saw seven different movies.
Emerson Winters competed in the super stock division. It was her second trip to Akron, but she could not be reached for comment.
