Strong winds cause minor property damage across the Aleutians

Unalaska, AK – Strong winds blasted the Aleutians today, causing some property damage in Unalaska and across the chain.

Locally, windshields have been shattered by flying debris, and a dumpster lid blew off while being transported across Captains Bay, causing damage to the bridge. A vehicle collision also took place during the storm. In Atka, high winds tore the door off the local clinic.

This morning, the Unalaska Department of Public Safety and the Coast responded to reports that a longliner was in distress. The F/V Ocean Harvester had been moored in Captains Bay when the anchor started to drag, causing the boat to drift toward land.

Charlie Medlicott works with the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Detachment, and he explains what happened to the vessel.

"It started to drag anchor, but it never actually ran aground," says Medlicott. "It came real close, because the anchor fetched up and kept it just off of the rocks over by the new small boat harbor. So, the harbor master called the tug Saratoga, and they got a line on it, and they put a couple of people on it. There was nobody on board. They ended up towing it and securing it at the pier at Westward Seafoods."

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory that winds will blow between 45 and 65mph through the evening, with gusts of up to 85mph. But Sergeant Mike Holman with the Department of Public Safety says that some members of the community have already reported higher speeds.

"We've had one gust that was 94mph that was recorded at the school," says Holman.

So far, there have been no reports of storm-related injuries.
