Summer Bay Classic a windy success

Unalaska, AK – Nineteen people participated in the Bobby Johnson Summer Bay Classic this weekend. The 13-mile half-marathon for bikers and runners starts at the PCR and goes over Overland Pass, past Summer Bay, and back to the Methodist parsonage. It was renamed this year in honor of local cyclist Bobby Johnson, who recently passed away while competing in the Fireweed 400 cycling race.

This year's first place men's cycling winner was Forrest Bowers with a time of 1:03:58. He said his time wasn't as good this year because of a partially flat tire, fewer stiff competitors to spur him on, and difficult weather conditions.

"I've done the Summer Bay Classic three times now and the weather was definitely a factor this time more so than any other race I've done," he said. "We had a headwind pretty much all the way headed up the hill and then a headwind all the way along the beach coming back from Summer Bay. That slowed things down a little bit. And with the road being wet and soft, that slowed things down a little bit, too. So it was pretty challenging."

Bowers said he frequently rides the pass. Tully McConnell, who came in second with 1:09:06, said he only tried it a couple of times before deciding to join the race.

"Well, at first I wasn't sure because I was a little bit afraid of going down hill because I didn't want to get hurt. After a couple more times I felt a little better about it and I said I was gonna do it."

Conrad Booth topped the male runners with 1:37:26 and Fredy Paz came in second with 1:51:09.

On the women's side, Anchorage resident Rachel Samuelson took first in the biking competition with a time of 1:17:07. It was her first time both biking over the pass and competing in a cycling race.

"I've never been on any trails that had that much continuous steep uphill in the Anchorage area. It was really hard," she said.

Kristine King came in second for biking with 1:25:57. Third place was secured by one of Unalaska's newest health gurus, Susan Lynch, with a time of 2:30:56. The top female runner was Jacarei Echevarria with just under one hour and 52 minutes followed by Crystal Peterson at two hours and 34 minutes.
