Unalaska, AK – On Friday night, swimmers of all sorts gathered at the aquatic center for the third and final community meet of the season. Members of the Unalaska Raiders swim team matched up against Aleutian Island Masters swimmers and Coast Guardsmen. Glenn Cole, Unalaska City School principal and activities director, explains why the meets are so vital to the team.
"With limited numbers of opportunities to compete against other schools, it's important that our community really steps up and helps us out," says Cole. "And they have."
The Unalaska Raiders swim team will be competing in a regional swim meet in Kodiak this coming weekend.
This weekend, the volleyball team also participated in the inaugural Unalaska crab pot tournament. It pitted three school teams against three community teams. The tournament last from 2 in the afternoon to 9 o'clock at night. The raider varsity team came out on top, taking home the first place trophy.
And the wrestling team traveled to Seward for a dual tournament. They split three and three, winning against Seward, Grace, and the Colony junior varsity teams. It was a better showing than their previous tournament, which they lost to Barrow 42-18.
"All of the students improved from the week before when they went to Nikiski and continue to improve each week," says Cole. "So we're hoping that by the time they get to the regional meet, they're going to be in good standing to place high and qualify for state."
