TelAlaska adding local cell phone towers

Unalaska, AK – TeleAlaska is expanding their infrastructure in order to provide cell phone service. They've set up a tower on Haystack and plan on putting one on Ballyhoo and another in the Valley. Chief Operations Officer Dave Goggins said the new towers will help coverage gaps.
"We're looking at putting a repeater site out in the Valley just to get better coverage. It can be a little sketchy out there right now, so we know we need to put another site out there. We're working to secure some property with a couple of different landowners out there."
Like Alaska Wireless, TelAlaska will have local and non-local cell phone plans and data services, but they cannot support iPhones because they are not owned by AT&T. The company, which also provides service in Cold Bay, Sand Point, and King Cove, plans on developing wireless internet hot spots in the future. People who are already receiving federal assistance through programs, such as Food Stamps and Medicaid, can also apply for $1 monthly services. Their cell phone coverage should start Tuesday.
