Truck Takes A Dip In Small Boat Harbor

A mechanical failure caused a truck to roll into the Carl E. Moses Small Boat Harbor on Monday. No injuries resulted.
Troy Gibson had just finished lunch and was coming back to the St. Dominic, the cod boat that he captains. When he went to park the crew’s Toyota pickup truck, the brakes gave out. Gibson knew to get out of the car as quickly, even though he had to interrupt a phone call with his spouse.
"It was pretty funny because I was talking to my wife on the phone, and I said, 'Hang on, honey!'" Gibson say. "Then I jumped out, and just watched the truck hop down into the water."
The Unalaska Ports Department, its public safety department , and the Coast Guard’s marine safety detachment were all called for response. Removing the totally submerged vehicle took one scuba diver and one piece of heavy machinery owned by Samson Tug and Barge.
While the accident was dramatic, its impact wasn’t. The truck contained a little over a gallon of antifreeze, two gallons of gasoline, and about a gallon of engine oil. The accident didn’t cause a sheen, but harbor officer Tim Mahoney says that the crew of the St. Dominic and the Coast Guard were prepared in the event of environmental problems.
"The crew of the St. Dominic was very proactive," says Mahoney. "They had absorbent boom ready to deploy, and the Coast Guard had made arrangements with Alaska Chadux if anything was heading into anything sensitive."
As for the vehicle, it’s considered a total loss. Troy Gibson says that the crew had already spoken of replacing it before the incident occurred.
