Tundra fire on Ballyhoo extinguished

Friday, March 11 2011
Unalaska, AK – A tundra fire broke out near Ballyhoo Road this afternoon, just above the Kloosterboer facility.
"It was a controlled burn - they had a proper burn permit and everything," says fire captain John Droska. "But sparks had gone up and started the tundra fire above where they were doing the controlled burn."
Because of the sensitivity of the land on Ballyhoo, extra precautions were taken when putting out the fire.
"We were trying to use as little water as possible," says Droska. "We were laying it on pretty gently, because we didn't want to disturb the tundra and cause a landslide obviously because it was up on top of a cliff a little bit."
Droska adds that there was "minimal environmental impact," and the burn area covered approximately 20 square feet.
Five fire trucks responded, and the fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes. No one was injured by the fire.
