Two Apply to Fill Council Vacancy

Wednesday, March 13 2013

Two people have applied to fill an empty seat on Unalaska’s city council. Skip Southworth and Doanh Tran both submitted letters of interest by the Tuesday night deadline.

Southworth is a former city councilor, and he writes in his letter that he’ll be retiring as a longshoreman in a few months, and would like to, “use this free time to continue working hard as a member of the City Council.” He also notes in his letter that he is a homeowner and 33-year resident of the community.

Tran attended Unalaska City High School, and she writes in her letter that her background in politics would be an asset to the council. Since graduating from college with a political science degree, Tran has been an aide to legislators at both the state and national levels. She currently works for Representative Bob Herron.

The city council will review the applications and make an appointment at their next regular meeting, on March 26.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, we reported that Doanh Tran graduated from Unalaska City High School. She graduated from Mt. Edgecumb High School in Sitka.

Point of clarification on Saturday, March 16 2013:

What do you mean by pressures of the City Management?

Just Saying on Friday, March 15 2013:

I think it's great to see there are some interest in the community in running for the vacant seat on council. Both letters read fine, one maybe a little better than the other. My opinion only. I think what needs to be taken into consideration in filling the vacant seat, is 1) What is their vision for the community 2)How will they SERVE our community verses personaly gain and coruption, and 3) How tough are you going to be when pushed to vote in favor of something you feel would be unfavorable for the members of the community 4) What can you bring to the table with regards to the community, and 5) Will you always stand up, be strong, and voice your concerns for members of the community?
The council has a reputation of getting ride of those who will not fold to the pressures of the City management, and others...How are either of you any different?

Just saying
