Two survivors rescued after ship sinks near False Pass

Unalaska, AK – Two crew members were rescued by the Coast Guard after a fishing boat sank off the Alaska Peninsula last night.

The fishing vessel Andromeda was reported missing somewhere between Port Moller and False Pass at 9:30 p.m. The Coast Guard cutter Mellon was in the area at the time, with a helicopter on board.

"The helicopter was able to locate two men on the shore in survival suits," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Levi Read.

The men were hoisted off the beach and taken to the Cold Bay Clinic, which wouldn't provide any information on their condition this afternoon. The Coast Guard has not yet identified them. Read said they were the only two people on the ship when it sunk.

The Andromeda was a 34-foot salmon gillnetter owned by Bear River Fisheries of Anacortes, Washington. It was fishing out of Port Moller.

Read said the boat had issued a mayday call that it was taking on water in its engine room shortly after noon on Thursday, but later radioed to say the problem had been fixed. The Andromeda was supposed to rendezvous with two other fishing vessels in False Pass later in the evening, and those boats notified the Coast Guard when it didn't arrive.
