Unalaska Coast Guard Petty Officer Passes Away

Tuesday, March 18 2014

A member of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment in Unalaska has passed away in Anchorage.

Petty Officer Michal Marciniak died at Alaska Regional Hospital Tuesday morning while receiving treatment for a serious illness.

Marciniak had fallen ill Monday morning and was medevacked to Cold Bay on a Coast Guard helicopter. A commercial medevac brought him to Alaska Regional’s emergency room in critical condition.

Public affairs officer Shawn Eggert says the Coast Guard is investigating what happened, but at this point, he says it’s clear Marciniak’s illness wasn’t linked to his job.

Marciniak was a Marine Science Technician -- one of five at the Unalaska MSD. He was 30 years old.

Please check back with KUCB for more information.

Who Michal was as a friend and shipmate has been described very well by those who previously posted, and it makes me smile. What he could have been and the things he had yet to accomplish is the thought that saddens me most. Michal was capable of tremendous, wonderful things and the world is a lesser place without him. I won't forget him or what he stood for. He was an example to ALL. Rest in peace, brother.

Katrina Sheppard, ME3, USCG on Thursday, March 20 2014:

An incredible man and Coast Guardsman. His untimely departure is a staggering loss to family, friends, and country. I can remember joking that Michal was a walking CFR for his knowledge base was so extensive. I am grateful for his mentorship and I am so blessed to have had the privilege of serving with him. Praying that peace be with those he has left behind. You are missed, Michal. Rest in peace.

Laura Rayburn, MST2 on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

Rest in peace, shipmate.

Aron Kaloostian on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

I first met Marciniak when I transferred over to the Response Department from Law Enforcement at MSU Port Arthur, TX. This was around December 2010 and I worked across the desk from him for approximately 01 year.

He immediately reached out to help me get qualified as a Facility Inspector and further assisted me in reaching my goal of becoming a Pollution Responder. Being a Marine Science Technician was something that didn't come easy to me but it sure did to Marciniak.

There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't have a question about something or needed a regulation better explained to me. Marciniak was always patient and looked me in the eye with the answer showing a deep sense of pride and genuine concern for both his job and for me. He was the type of person that wasn't distracted by other things around him when talking to you and his ability to stay engaged in your concerns was truly inspiring.

I hadn't spoken with Marcinak since I left Port Arthur in December 2012 but I can't say I hadn't thought about him since. The times we had in that short year were amazing and his work ethic and friendship were unlike anything I had ever seen.

The Coast Guard is burdened by the loss of this amazing shipmate but more importantly the world is a little more empty without his presence. I can truly say that this man taught me the importance of being kind to others and about putting other people first in front of my own interests.

I will miss you dear friend and look forward to the day we will laugh again.

Brian Falk on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

Such a tragic loss of a terrific young patriot and public servant! Always inspired by his positivity and generosity. He will be sorely missed by shipmates around the globe. My prayers are with his friends and family. Such a privilege and honor to have served alongside Michal.

Ben Conger on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

My memories of Michael are of his humor and the ability to make me laugh. He taught me a great deal professionally and was a brilliant MST. Beyond that he loved making me and others laugh and for that I will forever be grateful. It was an absolute honor to have served with him. The Coast Guard lost a loyal and generous man who embodied the essence of the Coast Guard' s core values. RIP buddy.

Jason Weeden on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

Elmer Johnson on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

DHS and the USCG lost a very special man. Michael was a kind hearted man who loved life and his job, and always had a nice smile or friendly thing to say. He will be missed.

Randy Jenkins, LCDR USCG on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

Michal was the kind of person a supervisor hopes to get. Full of life, infectious passion for his job, intense loyalty to everyone he worked with, and someone who needed very little supervising. He had an uncanny knack of being able to anticipate what you needed; special mentoring, training or just a shoulder for his peers to lean on. You won’t find anyone who was more devoted to the Coast Guard or his friends. He will be sorely missed.

HS1 Nicole Flores on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

RIP shipmate! Prayers for your family!

Jesse Lucas on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

I didn't get much time to get to know Michal before he left for Alaska. Not much more than a handful of conversations, really. There's only so much I have a right to say, but I know I can say this much: It takes a very small amount of time to learn what kind of person Michal was. I only ever saw him in a good mood. He was always lifting the spirits of people around him. He was a very sharp guy and willing to teach others anything they wanted to know. Michal is someone I wish I had gotten to know better. The world just works the strange way it does. All the best to the Marciniak family and to his Coast Guard family as we heal from a very shared loss.

R. L. Clark GM3 on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Michal. I knew him for only a short time, but his hard work and dedication to his family, friends, coworkers, and the Coast Guard made a lasting impression on me. We have lost a good shipmate. Michal, you eill be missed.

Kristal Christian on Wednesday, March 19 2014:

Ashley Schad on Tuesday, March 18 2014:

Michal's friends and family have suffered a staggering blow today. For me to even attempt to summarize his character and describe how important he was to me on this website would be an injustice to the man Michal was. For anyone that knew Michal, this loss will propagate through the days, months, and years without recess. So much of who I am and what I have learned was instilled by him. If I had to choose just one quality of his to write about, it would be his compassion. He cared for the people in his life with unfaltering loyalty. I once mentioned to him how I liked cabbage stew, and a few days later, he brought me a bowl of bigosh. I found out some time later that bigosh is tricky to make and he did so for no other reason than to brighten my day. His compassion along with his highly analytical mind brought together an individual of tremendous capacity and potential. This tragedy is having a profoundly sad and rippling effect through the Coast Guard. I miss him deeply; he was one of the greatest colleagues, shipmates and friends I’ve ever known. We worked and worked hard together. He was my buddy and even after we moved to separate places he kept in contact daily and refused to let distance be a factor in our friendship. I wish I could say something comforting to his family. I wish I could ease their pain and suffering. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I will always look up to Michal and I’ll never forget the things he did, the things he said. I won’t forget the laughter, the frustrations, the lunchtime gatherings at Mi Yum, the late afternoon runs, and that silly grin he would give you when you did something stupid. Michal was loved by all and will be missed dearly.
