Unalaska, Koliganek win in first day of volleyball championships

Unalaska, AK – Bad weather delayed the start of the Region 1 girls' volleyball championships, which are being held in Unalaska for the first time this week, but it wasn't enough to stop it.
The opening buzzer came at 2 p.m. today instead of 10:30 a.m. as originally scheduled, but teams were able to get in two of the scheduled sets of games this afternoon.
In the first set, Unalaska went 3-0 against Aniak, beating the visitors 25-12 in the first game and 25-7 in each of the following games. Koliganek also shut out Hooper Bay in three games, 25-5, 25-8 and 25-16.
The rest of today's games were canceled because the teams playing them weren't able to reach the island. Unalaska City School Principal Glenn Cole said that Bethel, Kotzebue and Bristol Bay will try to make it again tomorrow morning.
"[They] have 24 hours to make it here, or they have to forfeit their first games," he said shortly before 2 p.m. "So we're hoping that everybody's able to make it in."
Because the championship is a double elimination tournament, forfeiting a game would leave those teams at a disadvantage, but wouldn't knock them out of the competition.
All three missing teams' flights circled Unalaska before giving up and flying back to the mainland. The Bristol Bay team is stuck in Cold Bay overnight, and will try to make it back at first light tomorrow. Bethel and Kotzebue were on their way back to Anchorage as of this evening, and will be taking off at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Only Barrow's team was able to make it in this afternoon. After the other flights turned around, that team's plane was able to take advantage of a break in the weather and land in Unalaska.
