Unalaska organizations raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Month

Wednesday, September 22 2010

Unalaska, AK – September is suicide prevention month, and a number of organizations are working to make Unalaska residents more aware of both the causes of suicide - and warning signs. Non-profits like the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Assocation and Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence have been distributing literature and even distributing coasters with emergency hotline information to local bars.

Alaska's suicide rate is twice the national average, and suicide is the sixth leading cause of death in the state. It's also a major cause of death for teenagers. Lynn Crane is the executive director of USAFV, and she lists some of the factors that contribute to Alaska's high suicide rate.

"Economic instability, high rates of drug and alcohol abuse, isolation of the communities - if you feel like your sort of trapped in a community maybe it's hard to see a way out," says Crane. "The weather, believe it or not can have an impact."

Crane adds that there are a number of things a person can do if they're worried that a friend or loved one is considering suicide.

"If you feel that someone is in danger, call the police and request a welfare check," says Crane. "Ask the question. Saying, I'm worried about you. I'm worried that you might hurt yourself. Have you ever thought about hurting yourself?'"

USAFV and APIA will be hosting the "Make a Difference Dinner" at the senior center on Friday night in an effort to increase awareness.
