Unalaska Remains America's Top Fishing Port

Wednesday, September 07 2011

The Port of Dutch Harbor is once again America’s busiest fishing port.

Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its seafood rankings for 2010, and Unalaska tops the list for landings in terms of volume. Approximately 515 million pounds of seafood crossed the docks here last year – that’s almost 100 million more pounds than Reedville, Virginia, the next busiest port. The community has now been first on that list for 22 years in a row.

Seven other Alaskan communities are also on that list. Kodiak ranks fifth with 325 million pounds, and Cordova is eighth with almost 150 million pounds. Naknek, Ketchikan, Seward, Sitka, and Petersburg also made the top 20.

The rankings for most profitable port are a little bit different. While only about 130 million pounds of seafood were delivered New Bedford, Massachusetts in 2010, the total catch was worth over $300 million. Unalaska is number two in terms of value, with its catch bringing in about $160 million. Kodiak, Naknek, and Cordova rounded out the top 5, and Seward, Sitka, Homer, and Ketchikan were included in the top 20.
