Unalaska Volleyball, Wrestling Face Tough Competition at States

Monday, December 10 2012

Unalaska’s volleyball and wrestling teams competed in the state championships over the weekend. The Lady Raiders came in fifth overall, losing to Su Valley and Klawock, but coming out ahead against Chevak.

The Raiders wrestling team sent four boys to states. Three of them placed fourth in their individual weight classes, with junior Connor McConnell making it to the semi-finals.

“In my tenure as the coach -- and that goes back twelve years -- this is the best we’ve done," says Steve Gregory. "And I did a little bit of research and I believe this is the highest the team has scored at the state tournament -- and had more placers -- than probably in the past twenty years.”

The team placed fifteenth out of 44, competing against schools with much larger teams.
