Unalaska Voters Supported Coastal Zone Management

Wednesday, August 29 2012
Alaska primary voters have rejected a controversial plan that would have reinstated a coastal zone management plan. But if Unalaska voters had their way, the measure would have passed.
In Unalaska, 68% of voters approved the coastal zone management program. 57% of Unalaska voters backed Measure 1, which offered property tax breaks. That measure failed by a slim margin at the state level.
Overall, voter turnout in Unalaska was 12%, with 217 ballots cast.
73 ballots were cast in the Republican primary. U.S. Representative Don Young had an easy victory in Unalaska, with 57 votes. At the state level, Young won with about 78% of the vote.
121 ballots were cast in the Democratic primary. U.S. House candidate Sharon Cissna won with 40 votes in Unalaska, and repeated that victory at the state level. She’ll run to unseat Young this November.
Democratic incumbents Lyman Hoffman and Bob Herron ran unopposed for their seats in the state legislature. This will be Herron’s first term representing district 37 in the state House of Representatives. He’s taking Bryce Edgmon’s seat, as a result of redistricting.
