Van pulled from harbor after Christmas accident
Friday, December 28 2007
Unalaska, AK – A taxi that veered off Ballyhoo Road into the harbor and sank on Christmas Day was pulled out of the water Wednesday.
The taxi driver, Thao Thanh Doan of Blue Checker Cab, had just dropped off his fares and was driving past the gates at the end of the runway when he slipped off the road in bad weather, according to Sgt. Jennifer Shockley of the Public Safety Department.
At the time, conditions were very icy, with wind and blowing rain. Shockley says there were no injuries and no alcohol was involved. The driver hitched a ride home and notified public safety about 40 minutes after the accident.
The Christmas accident happened just five days after another van ended up in the ocean on the other side of town. On December 20, driver Daniel Desautel lost control of his vehicle on Captains Bay Road and ended up in the water. Desautel was going between 35 and 40 miles per hour at the time, according to Shockley, and skidded on a patch of ice that was covered with snow.
Three people were in the van at the time, but no one was injured. Desautel was ticketed for speeding.
