Volleyball regionals postponed on account of weather

Unalaska, AK – This week Unalaska is hosting the regional 1A, 2A and 3A girls' volleyball championships for the first time, but it's going to happen a little later than scheduled.
Today's high winds have kept most of the teams' flights from arriving here, and Unalaska City School principal Glenn Cole said the first game will be pushed back from its original start time of 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Teams from three villages made it in yesterday, and the team from Aniak was able to arrive today, but the other five teams have yet to reach the island.
Once they are here, things will kick off with a skills competition, followed by the first game between Unalaska and Aniak. Games will continue from 9 a.m. to about 9 p.m. through the championship on Saturday.
Cole said the school is going out of its way to make things comfortable for the 110 visiting athletes, who are staying on school grounds during their visit.
"They're sleeping at the school, and the PCR has been very helpful in setting aside times for students to practice and warm up," Cole said.
The big three processing plants in town, Alyeska, UniSea and Westward, are donating meals to the visitors. There are also several events happening in relation to the tournament, starting with a potluck for coaches and players in the high school multipurpose room at 6:30 tonight, followed by a team swim from 6:30 to 8:30 at the pool. The Unalaska student council is planning other events as well, including a dance for high school and junior high students at 10 o'clock on Saturday night.
For now, the championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Cole says the school is still looking for volunteers to help out during the games. If you're up for it, call him at 581-1222.
