Voter turnout average so far in Unalaska

Tuesday, November 07 2006

Unalaska, AK – Today is Election Day in Unalaska and elsewhere, and turnout here has been average so far, according to City Clerk Debra Mack. As of 5 p.m. 407 people had voted at Unalaska's polling place in City Hall. Another 74 absentee, question and personal representative ballots had also been cast.

In addition to statewide races and ballot measures, Unalaska voters will choose between Democrat Bryce Edgmon, Republican Ron Bowers and incumbent and write-in candidate Carl Moses for House District 37's representative seat, and between Democratic incumbent Lyman Hoffman and Republican challenger Norman Ayagalria for the district's state Senate seat.

The race for Moses's seat has been a heated one in Unalaska. Late last week, the state Division of Elections received a complaint about possible efforts on the part of four businesses in Unalaska to sway their employees to vote for Moses. That complaint didn't lead to an investigation, and representatives of both the Division of Elections and Alaska Public Offices Commission, which regulates political campaigns, say that while they've received inquiries about campaign conduct in the community since then, no more formal complaints have been filed and no investigations are underway.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. at City Hall.
