Voting underway for three City Council seats

Tuesday, October 03 2006

Unalaska, AK – As of 4:55 this afternoon, 435 voters had cast ballots at City Hall in this year's City Council election, according to City Clerk Debra Mack.

Running for Council Seat B are Augie Kochuten and acting city councilman Rocky Caldero. Running for Council Seat F are Donna Rahn and Juanita Lewis. And running for Council Seat G are Dick Peck, Faustino Casteneda and Valerie Lemas.

The most visible campaigns today have been those for Donna Rahn and Rocky Caldero. Numerous supporters were waving signs supporting the two candidates at intersections on either side of City Hall, outside of the area in which campaigning is prohibited on election day. Both Rahn and Caldero work at UniSea's Dutch Harbor processing plant, and all of the supporters who spoke with KIAL identified themselves as UniSea employees. However, both the employees themselves and human resources personnel at the plant said that the employees were volunteering their time to the campaigns.

"We volunteered, because I really believe in supporting them," said Jovenia Dumon, who's worked in Unalaska since 1989 and was holding a sign supporting Rahn at the intersection of Fifth and Broadway this afternoon. "I know they can do something for Unalaska."

The polls are open until 8 p.m. this evening at Unalaska City Hall. Check www.kial.org for election results this evening.
