Winds blow van down General's Hill

Tuesday, November 27 2007

Unalaska, AK – High winds this afternoon sent a 40-foot container van rolling down General's Hill, hitting at least one home in the area.

Public Safety Department Lt. Jamie Sunderland says that for now, the van doesn't appear to be in danger of moving any further.

"Right now it's kind of burrowed into the ground, holding in place," he said at about 5 p.m. "The owners have been notified, but I'm thinking for now they're going to have to just wait a while, since the winds are gusting pretty bad."

The identity of the van's owner wasn't available this afternoon.

According to the weather station at the Unalaska Airport, winds have gusted as high as 67 knots or 77 miles per hour today, which is on the low end of what would be considered hurricane force elsewhere. But so far, Sunderland says there haven't been any injuries or other damage reported around town, and the National Weather Service has yet to issue any severe weather warnings for the island.
