Summer Reading Programs are hosted at libraries across the country to keep kids reading over the summer, encourage reading for fun, and combat the “summer learning slide” that happens while school is out. This year, the Unalaska Public Library expanded our yearly elementary program to include preschoolers, teens, and adults, with the goal of encouraging the entire community to read over the summer. Twenty teams came out to play extreme golf, Aleutian-style,  in the hills of Unalaska’s Pyramid Valley on August 8 and 9.  The annual Tundra Golf Classic is a fundraiser for local nonprofit Unalaska Community Broadcasting.

Based on the honor system and score cards turned in at the end of the second day,  teams from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment and North Pacific Fuel tied for the overall tournament win, both at 8 under par.  Second place went to Team Matson at 6 under par and third place to Harbor Welding’s Grey Team at 5 under par. Nathan Palmer took the Closest to the Pin competition, at 4 feet 6 inches, and Tony Carrillo won the Longest Drive contest at 304 yards.  Congratulations to all! (click here to read more)

Join us this weekend for two days of extreme golf in the beautiful hills of Pyramid Valley! The annual Aleutian Tundra Golf Classic, a fundraiser for Unalaska Community Broadcasting,  takes place on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9. We'll provide golf balls, tees, clubs and bags so just bring yourself and your enthusiasm for Aleutian style golf! In addition to playing nine holes each day, try your hand at Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests. The firefighters will also be on site with food, soft drinks and snacks for a donation to ASFA. It's $120 for a four person team to play both days. Tee-times are available now by calling 581-1888 or emailing jane@kucb.org. If you don't have time to play, you're welcome to come out to have some lunch and watch the fun for awhile. We're also looking for volunteers to help at the event. Thanks to our generous sponsors: Alaska Ship Supply, Alaska Vessel Agents, Alyeska Seafoods, APL, Coastal Transportation, Delta Western, Harbor Welding and Diving, Industrial Resources, Inc., Kloosterboer, KNIK Construction, Matson, North Pacific Fuel, Norwegian Rat Saloon, OSI, PacSteve, PND Engineers, Red Fish Electronics, UniSea, and special thanks to the Ounalashka Corporation for use of their land and for sponsoring the event.
