Unalaska, AK – All 23 crew members have been rescued from a Japanese-owned shipping vessel that capsized in the North Pacific late Sunday. Coast Guard officials said today that the last crew member was lifted off the ship at 10:09 Monday night.


Search called off for missing Heritage crew member

Unalaska, AK – U.S. Coast Guard crews have called off the search for a victim of a marine accident Sunday night in the Bering Sea. A skiff from the Kodiak-based research vessel Heritage capsized near Saint Matthew Island at about 11 p.m. Sunday night, with four crew members on board. Three of them were able to swim to shore, but the fourth is still missing. A Kodiak-based Coast Guard helicopter made several passes over the area and the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Morganthau dispatched a small boat to search the coastline of Saint Matthew, where the skiff was headed, both without success. The Coast Guard hasn't released the name of the missing crew member yet and the vessel's owner, the Heritage Fishing Partnership, couldn't be reached for comment today. The Heritage was conducting research for the International Pacific Halibut Commission.


Coast Guard, Air National Guard rush to rescue

Unalaska, AK – Rescue crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska Air National Guard were both coming to the aid of a Japanese container vessel that was foundering south of the Aleutians Monday evening.

The Cougar Ace, a 654-foot car carrier, ran into trouble 230 miles from Adak Island in the North Pacific Sunday night. The cause of the emergency remains unknown. What is known is that the vessel is listing almost horizontally and leaking oil, and that its 22-person crew is still on board. The Japanese-owned ship was on its way from Singapore to Vancouver, British Columbia with a cargo of nearly 5,000 vehicles when it began having problems, notifying the Coast Guard of its situation at 11:09 p.m. Sunday night.

Unalaska, AK – A Japanese container vessel is taking on water south of the Aleutians and a research vessel is missing a crew member in the Bering Sea following two separate accidents last night.

A U.S. Coast Guard C-130 aircraft based out of Kodiak is standing by to rescue the crew of the Cougar Ace, a 654-foot car carrier that began listing and leaking oil 230 miles from Adak Island in the North Pacific last night. The cause of the emergency is unknown as of yet. The Japanese-owned ship was en route from Singapore to Vancouver, British Columbia with a cargo of nearly 5,000 vehicles when it ran into trouble, notifying the Coast Guard of its situation at 11:09 p.m. last night. Coast Guard Petty Office Sara Francis said that, in addition to the aircraft, the Coast Guard had dispatched the Rush, a Hawaii-based cutter that was on a law enforcement mission in Alaskan waters.

Senate clears Akutan harbor funding

Unalaska, AK – The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to renew the Water Resources Development Act, which stands to benefit several Alaskan communities if it passes the House of Representatives. One of those communities is Akutan. Although Akutan is an important commercial fishing port for the Aleutians, it doesn't have a harbor--all it has, for now, is a city dock. The Senate bill would change that, earmarking $9 million for the construction of a new harbor for the fishing village.
