No Funding for Unalaska in Governor's Budget

Thursday, December 12 2013

Governor Sean Parnell announced his proposed budget for fiscal year 2015 Thursday, and it doesn’t including any funding for Unalaska’s capital projects.

The city had asked for $4.5 million to pay for a fourth engine at the powerhouse, plus three other lower-priority projects. City Manager Chris Hladick says it’s no surprise to him that those requests aren’t in the governor’s budget.

Record Profits from Firefighters' Ball Will Fund CPR Classes

Wednesday, December 11 2013

Money raised at last weekend’s Firefighters' Ball will help public safety provide CPR certifications to the community for the first time.

The ball turned a profit of $6,000 from ticket sales and other contributions -- five times as much as last year.

Senior Fire Captain Zac Schasteen is the president of the local chapter of the Alaska State Firefighters Association, which puts on the ball. He says they’ll use about half the money raised to train firefighters in giving CPR lessons.

At Reopened Museum of the Aleutians, a Focus on Storytelling

Wednesday, December 11 2013

The Museum of the Aleutians in Unalaska reopened this past weekend after five months of renovations.

As KUCB’s Annie Ropeik reports, the space has been transformed in an effort to tell the whole story of the chain.

Stepping into the newly renovated Museum of the Aleutians is meant to feel like stepping into the sea. A model kayaker in a traditional 18-foot craft appears to paddle toward visitors. The backdrop -- a mural of the churning ocean.

Seven Unalaska wrestlers have earned a trip to state finals.

The Raiders competed at the Great Alaska conference meet this weekend in Dillingham. To be eligible to move on to the state championships, wrestlers had to finish in the top four in their weight class.

Gabe Kochuten, Rainier Marquez, Tommy Nguyen, Tristan Waldron, Kim Gumera, and Dylan Magnusen all made the cut, with Magnusen winning first place in the 182-pound division. Trey Henning placed fifth in his weight class. Henning was moved up to a state berth after the fourth-place finisher in his class was disqualified, says coach Steven Gregory.

Unalaska’s volleyball team is on its way to the state championships. The Raiders secured their berth this weekend at the 2A Borealis conference playoffs in Anchorage.

Coach Julie Heard says Unalaska played a solid match against Holy Rosary, before moving on to a challenging bout with Cook Inlet Academy, or CIA.

"CIA beat us the first two games, and these are matches three out of five," Heard says. "So we needed to come back and beat them the next three games to win the match. And we did that."

Rep. Bob Herron Cited for Ethics Violations

Friday, December 06 2013

Representative Bob Herron is being cited for ethics violations, dating back to when he was first elected to the Legislature in 2009.

The House ethics committee found that Herron knowingly withheld "sufficient detail" on his business ventures with another legislator -- senator Lyman Hoffman.

Herron and Hoffman both represent western Alaska, and they co-own a school bus company in the Bethel area. Golden Eagle Unlimited has a $930,000 contract with the Lower Kuskokwim School District to transport students.
