Waesche Crew Member Dies After Injury During November Rescue

A Coast Guard petty officer has died after being injured during a rescue near Unalaska in November.
The Coast Guard says Petty Officer Third Class Travis Obendorf died Wednesday in a hospital in Seattle. Obendorf was a crew member aboard the Coast Guard cutter Waesche.
The Waesche sent its small boat to rescue the 22-person crew of a stranded fishing vessel, the Alaska Mist, on Nov. 11. The 160-foot Alaska Mist had lost power and was adrift off Amak Island, which is north of Cold Bay. The Resolve Pioneer was also sent from Resolve-Magone Marine Services to assist in towing the vessel back to Unalaska.
Council Approves Agreement with Qawalangin Tribe

City council finalized a new partnership with the Qawalangin tribe at their last meeting of the year Tuesday.
The council approved two agreements with the tribe -- one to let the city and tribe cooperate on projects on tribe lands, and one specifically about working together on replacing Summer Bay Bridge.
That agreement will let the city use a million-dollar grant the tribe got for the project.
City Appoints New PCR Director

The city announced its new parks, culture and recreation director on Tuesday. D. Tyrell McGirt will head up the PCR when current director Jeff Hawley retires in January.
Council to Vote on Title 3 Wage Increases

City council will vote on increasing wages for Title 3 city employees at their meeting tonight.
The changes to the pay structure are the first step in implementing the recommendations of a city-wide compensation study done last year.
That study was done by an outside firm. It said the city needs to make its wages more competitive and bring them in line with the national market and the current economy.
Raiders Volleyball Takes Second Place at State Championship

The Unalaska Raiders girls’ volleyball team took second place in the state championships in Anchorage this weekend.
The Raiders lost in three sets to Su Valley High School at the 2A finals on Saturday.
It wraps up a strong season for the team. They headed into Saturday's matches at Dimond High School after a series of wins last week.
Greenpeace Fined for Maritime Violation Off Alaskan Shores

A state board has fined Greenpeace $15,000 for traveling through Alaskan waters without a marine pilot.
The violation occurred during Greenpeace’s “Save the Arctic” tour to protest Shell’s oil exploration in July 2012.
Greenpeace had sent the Esperanza, their 237-foot, Dutch-flagged research vessel. The Esperanza were supposed to study corals and sealife in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.
Pollock Fleet Gets Small Boost for 2014

Slightly more walleye pollock will be up for harvest in the Bering Sea in 2014.
At a meeting in Anchorage last week, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council voted to bump up the catch limit to 1.267 million metric tons. That’s an increase of about 20,000 tons.
But many people in fishing industry told the council they should be allowed to take even more.
Donna Parker was one of them. She’s with the Arctic Storm Management Group, a pollock fishing company.
Unalaska Wrestlers Finish Strong at State Finals

Unalaska's Raider wrestling squad wrapped up their season at state finals in Anchorage this weekend.
Seniors Dylan Magnusen and Rainier Marquez both finished in the top five for their weight classes. Magnusen won third place in the 182-pound division, while Marquez took fourth place wrestling at 113 pounds.
In all, seven Unalaska Raiders qualified for the championships after finishing in the top four at regionals in November.
Raiders to Play Conference Rivals in State Volleyball Final

The Unalaska Raider volleyball team beat Craig High School in the semi-final round of 2A state championships.
That means the Raiders are moving on to the last round of state finals Saturday night -- and they'll be competing against their conference rivals for the championship title.
The Raiders be playing Su Valley, just as they did at state finals in 2012. Su Valley walked away with the win last year.
