Parade, Fireworks and Barbecue Planned for July 4th

Wednesday, July 03 2013

There’s a full schedule of Independence Day activities planned for tomorrow in Unalaska.

The day will kick off with the annual 4th of July parade. Coordinator Albert Burnham says so far eleven floats have registered to participate.

“Which is a little down from last year, but we usually have five or six people show up day-of with floats too. There’s no charge to be in the parade, and if they show up, they just get to let line up at the back of the parade, and we let them go.”

Among the floats that have registered are a concrete mixer and a dump truck from construction companies working around town, as well as the usual participants like the fire department and Scout troops.

The theme of this year’s parade is “A Very Ferry 50th Fourth,” in honor of the Alaska Marine Highway System’s 50th Anniversary. Burnham says the theme was selected before the state announced that the ferry would be out of service for most of the summer, but adds it shouldn’t affect the parade.

“They’re still offering the Golden Ticket.”

The Golden Ticket is a $500 voucher for travel on the Marine Highway. It will be awarded by a panel of five judges to the float that best represents the theme. Burnham says the voucher will be valid for a year from the time when the ferry makes it back to Unalaska.

In addition to the parade, there’s will be a duck race put on by the Ballyhoo Lions Club, a Fire Department barbecue at the elementary school, and a fireworks show at midnight.
