Some Charges Dropped in School Drug Investigation
Wednesday, April 30 2014
All charges have been dropped for one of two high school seniors arrested in a pair of marijuana busts earlier this month.
Unalaska police arrested 18-year-olds Johanna Pham and Shadrack Baird about two weeks ago, along with 30-year-old Jason Tungul. The arrests came after Baird allegedly sold marijuana to a confidential informant.
All three people faced misdemeanor drug charges. And Pham and Tungul were both charged with a felony for allegedly trying to get rid of evidence just before their arrest.
Now, that felony charge has been dropped for both of them.
The state prosecutor also dismissed Pham’s misdemeanor charge. Her case is now listed as closed in court records.
Jason Tungul also faced two misdemeanor drug charges -- one fifth and one sixth degree. The fifth degree charge carries heavier penalties, and it was dismissed last week. That leaves Tungul with one misdemeanor charge.
As for Shadrack Baird, his charges haven't changed -- he’s still facing two fifth-degree misdemeanors.
The investigation started after a 14-year-old student at the high school was found to be in possession of marijuana. The discovery led police to arrest 22-year-old Soo Enele on a felony charge for allegedly selling the drug to minors. After his arrest, Enele gave police information that led them to Baird.
Enele posted bail last week and has been released while he awaits court appearances in the next few weeks. He’s been ordered to stay away from the schools, community center, library and pool.
