Council Reconvenes to Take Up Code Changes

Tuesday, July 08 2014

Unalaska city council is back with a full agenda tonight, after several weeks’ hiatus.

They'll be finalizing a number of changes to city code, including merging the Planning Commission with the Historic Preservation Commission.

The commission lapsed around 2008, after a number of members stepped down or moved away. Vacancies were never filled -- city clerk Cat Hazen says there wasn’t enough public interest to keep the board going.

Landfill Expansion Goes Back Out to Bid

Monday, June 30 2014

The city’s landfill expansion project is back out to bid after remnants of explosives at the site stopped work earlier this year.

Bids are due Tuesday afternoon for the project, which involves building two new cells at the landfill.

Northern Alaska Contractors was originally hired for the job this past spring, at a price of about $3.9 million. But the company put the project on hold after workers found dynamite wrappers in rocks that had been trucked into the site.

Sen. Begich Pushes for Wind Monitor at Unalaska Airport

Friday, June 27 2014

Alaska Sen. Mark Begich used a Senate subcommittee hearing on airport safety this week to press for a new piece of equipment at the runway in Unalaska.

The subcommittee on aviation met Wednesday to talk about the NextGen Air Traffic System. It’s a new satellite surveillance system that the Federal Aviation Administration hopes to install in place of older aircraft radar.

FAA deputy administrator Michael Whitaker was on hand to answer the subcommittee’s questions. When it was Begich’s turn to speak, he brought up his recent visit to Unalaska.

Road Access Limited as Summer Bay Construction Begins

Tuesday, June 24 2014

Construction is ramping up on the Summer Bay Bridge, but a plan for diverting traffic around the popular recreation site is still in progress.

City officials met with Northern Alaska Contractors on Tuesday -- just one day after work crews tried to close off Summer Bay Road at the landfill.

"Well, there was enough space around the edges of the barricades that the public just drove right around it," says public works director Tom Cohenour.

A British kayak team that’s paddling the Aleutian Islands reached Unalaska Sunday night.

KUCB’s Annie Ropeik was part of a group that kayaked out to greet them.

Since they set out from Adak in May, Sarah Outen and her kayaking partner Justine Curgenven have had plenty of warm welcomes in Aleutian villages. But:

"No one’s ever been out to kayak to meet us," she says.

Trial Set for Man Charged in Deadly Fight

Tuesday, June 10 2014

A grand jury has indicted Anthony Pouesi on a manslaughter charge in the death of another person at the Harbor View Bar last month.

Twenty-eight-year-old Pouesi was arraigned Monday in Unalaska District Court. He’s charged with causing the death of another man, 44-year-old Marlo Adams, according to court documents.

Pouesi is alleged to have punched Adams once during an argument outside the Harbor View Bar on May 22. Adams then fell and hit his head on the ground, causing injuries that later proved fatal.

A recently vacated Wildlife Trooper post in Unalaska is staying empty for now.

As KUCB's Annie Ropeik reports, it means staffing levels will be unconventionally low in the town that's home to the patrol vessel Stimson.

Being an Alaska Wildlife Trooper in Unalaska means having two jobs: working on land with local law enforcement, and going out to sea aboard the Stimson.

Iliuliuk Creek Opens to New Fishing

Thursday, June 05 2014

It’s sport fishing season in downtown Unalaska -- and you might see folks fishing in some new spots this year.

For the first time, the entire Iliuliuk creek is open to fish for Dolly Varden trout -- from Alyeska Seafoods up to Unalaska lake.

"So right there, where both foot-walking bridges are, we had a bunch of complaints -- people calling and saying, ‘Hey, you can’t fish there!’" says Alaska Wildlife Trooper Sergeant Robin Morrisett. "Well, this year you can, for Dolly Varden only."

On Friday, 19 young women competed to represent Alaska in the next Miss America pageant -- among them, Unalaska resident Doanh Thi Tran. The Miss Alaska pageant usually gets most entries from urban places. That made Tran an exception.

She didn't advance to Miss America, but she did take home the Miss Congeniality and People's Choice awards.

KUCB's Annie Ropeik spoke to Tran last month as she was getting ready for the pageant. As she reports, Tran wanted to show off a different side of the last frontier.
